WEBSep 12, 2019 · Portal vein thrombosis is the most common cause of prehepatic portal hypertension, classically defined as partial or complete obstruction of the portal vein lumen. Anatomically, it can occur in the intrahepatic or extrahepatic portal venous tract and can involve the superior mesenteric vein, the splenic vein, or both ( 1, 2).
